Ways to Shave Calories

When it comes to losing weight, the most effective way to lose those pounds is through reducing your caloric intake. The only way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you burn each day. You can also do this with increasing how many calories you burn while keeping your caloric intake the same, but this isn’t as affective (exercise is still important to being healthy, however).

Drinks

One of the easiest ways to shave calories is by changing your drink. If you currently drink soda, then just replacing this with another drink, preferably low-fat milk or water, will greatly reduce your caloric intake. Soda has completely empty calories that don’t add to your daily nutrition needs, so removing them from your diet helps you to lose weight without losing out on nutrition. Replacing with milk with increase your calcium, vitamin D, protein and other nutrients while still reducing calories. Water is perfect to keep you hydrated and yet has no calories.

Proportions

The next easiest way to shave calories is with how much you eat. Keep serving sizes to just one serving of the food. For each meal have a one serving of each type of food. If you need more than one serving, such as vegetables, then eat a serving of a different vegetable. This will help keep your diet more balanced, so you’re more likely getting the vitamins and minerals that you need to be healthy.

When it comes to eating healthy, it takes some planning. The main thing is to be creative with what you eat, so you don’t get bored. Try new foods all the time!

Happily Exercising

Exercise is hard for most people. With the world of technology we live in, most of us spend our days in front of computers to do our work, making exercise an essential part of our schedule, but most of us don’t do it. There are many reasons why, but one of the most common is that we don’t enjoy it; it’s hard. Here are some ways to find exercise you enjoy.

Love What You Do

One of the most important things is to choose exercise that you enjoy. There’s bound to be something physical that you have fun doing. It could be dancing, a sport, running, competing, socializing, etc. You might like to go walking with a friend because you can talk the whole time. If you push one of your children in a stroller, that makes the activity even better for you. Maybe you’ve always enjoyed dancing. Lots of communities have adult classroom for ballroom dance, hip hop dancing, and contemporary dancing. Just pick an activity you love and then research how you can do it in your area.

Make It Part of Your Routine

Another thing that helps is to make exercise a habit. Choose something that “forces” you to exercise. Scheduled classes at a gym or local dance studio helps because you can’t say you’ll just do it in an hour. Another way is exercising with a friend. If your friend is meeting you at a specific time, you can’t put off exercising till later.

Exercise is essential to your health. No matter how long you live, you’ll be happier and healthier if you exercise on a regular basis.

Food Pyramid Is No More!

This 1992 food pyramid diagram can still be fo...

We all grew up with the food pyramid that the government used to help us understand what is involved in a healthy diet. Well, the food pyramid is no more. To better help us visualize how much we should be eating of each food, the pyramid has been swapped for a plate. The plate shows what portion of the plate should hold what foods. For those who are younger, they should use smaller plates or decrease the sizes of the portions.

On the plate, half of it should be fruits and vegetables, with vegetables taking up a larger portion. The other half of the plate is protein and grains. Half of the grains eaten each day should be whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, etc. Dairy is to the side in the form of a cup (for milk), though of course this includes cheese, yogurt, and cream as well.

If you’re looking for ways to lose weight, beans are a great choice. This unique food fits in both the vegetable section of the plate as well as the protein section. Beans are generally low in fat and calories and are full of protein and fiber. Dishes that combine beans with little or no meat, such as a chili, are great ways to get the nutrients you need without too many calories.

What’s great about the website ChooseMyPlate.gov is you can get an individualized profile according to your age, weight, and whether you’re trying to lose or maintain your weight. It will tell you how many calories to eat every day and what your portion sizes should be.

How to Be Successful at Exercising

It’s hard to start exercising when you haven’t in so long. Here are some tips to help you get started again.

  1. Choose a time and method. Don’t let yourself put it off or not go.
  2. Start off slow. The last thing you want to do is overdo it on the first day and be so sore and hurt that you can’t continue. So start slow. If you plan on jogging, walk for the first couple weeks or do fast jogging. If you want to run a marathon, start with running half a mile and increase it slowly.
  3. Do something you love. It’s easy to choose jogging because anyone can do it, but if you don’t love it, then you won’t stick with it. It’s a good thing to do here and there, but don’t let it be your only form of exercise.
  4. Use variety. If you’re one of those people that gets bored easily, don’t stick to the same exercise day in and day out. Watching the same exercise video can be boring. Instead, run one day, do an exercise video the next, use the Wii and balance board the third day, and then go for a walk with a friend on the fourth. Just make sure that your schedule is set so you can stick with it every week and aren’t forgetting because you don’t know what you’re going to do that day.
  5. Exercise with a friend. When and where possible exercise with someone else. This will help keep your motivation up because you have someone to answer to.

No matter what, don’t give up on exercising. It’s worth it!
